Nestled on the banks of the eternal Ganga, Kanpur stands as one of North India's major industrial centres with its own historical, religious and commercial importance. Believed to be founded by king Hindu Singh of the erstwhile state of Sachendi, Kanpur was originally known as 'Kanhpur'. Kanpur is one of the largest industrial cities of Uttar Pradesh and also is the administrative headquarters of Kanpur Nagar district and Kanpur division. It is also known as Leather City as it contains some of the largest and finest tanneries in India and in South Asia. Kanpur is the biggest city of the state and is main centre of commercial and industrial activities. Formerly known as Manchester of the country Kanpur is now also called the commercial capital of the state. It is situated on the most important national highways no. 2 & 25 and state highway. It is also situated on the main Delhi-Howrah railway trunk line. It is situated on bank of holy river Ganga and is about 126 meters above the sea level.
